Bringing the Outdoor Serenity Inside.

To be frank, I’ve recently tried to adjust my home priorities to not include guest rooms. We’ve lived in very small spaces for the past few years and reserving a full room to be rarely used just never made sense. But, with this home, which honestly is a little more than we technically need, we do have the luxury of creating a lovely and inviting guest room experience. And since we live in a place nowhere easy for our friends and family to visit, full of peace protecting pinion pines and mountain air, if they’re going to make the trek, we want to appreciate their effort with a little mountain oasis for them to rejuvenate in.
The Sad Before
As is typical of the aesthetic our home “featured” when we moved in, this room was painted an unfortunate easter egg green color, had mismatching oak and yellow pine wood accents, and the ugliest ceiling fan you can imagine – all of which overshadowed the gorgeous window view, lofty ceiling lines, and bright airiness from morning sun.
Simple Updates… Sometimes a renovation doesn’t need to be a massive undertaking.
This room really just needed a cohesive and calming color palette that brought the outside in in the right doses. To do this, we updated…
- Color: To compliment both the trim and floors, we selected Benjamin Moore’s White Dove for the walls, as it can play both warm and cool. This update alone has brought the freshness of the outside in, and actually made us appreciate our golden trim even more. We also gave a cleaner finish to the bi-fold closet doors with a couple coats of Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lacy. We gave a nod to the beautiful landscape of trees with an olive green comforter. And then grounded it all with a black framed rattan bedframe, giving the room a worldly feel that carries our guests far away from the home they know.
- Texture: Aside from the comforter and thoughtful touches of green plant elements, the color palette of the room is intentionally muted to encourage rest and relaxation in this peaceful little retreat for our guests. This means that instead of color, the dimension of the room is really made by texture. And functional texture at that! By functional texture, I mean these super attractive cream boucle storage ottomans for guest supplies (think towels, toiletries, etc). Additional texture layers are then found in these boucle throw pillows, velvet rosette pillow, white plaster and ceramic accents (custom 3D canvas art, vase, lamp), a plush sheepskin rug, and a dreamy guazy throw blanket.
- Styling: Now this was fun. And the star of the styling show is a set of gold wireless, battery operated wall sconces. They instantly add a custom feel to the room without us having to do more than drill a few screws in. They also offer multiple light tones and intensities to set the perfect mood in the room, in addition to a cleanly beautiful locally made candle and softly depicted surrounding artwork. Gold accents were tied together with the addition of gold shelf decor, a gorgeous arched mirror and a simple door pull knob for the closet.
And there you have it! It was only two weekends worth of work to create an inviting, cozy, and wonderfully serene retreat for anyone who comes to visit!
