Yes, we started our kitchen renovation last September, and yes, it’s still not *quite* finished (I say as I ask you to ignore the floor tile edges and waiting-to-be-installed cabinet toe kicks). But it’s definitely 95% there and it’s so incredibly functional and enjoyable to operate in that I often forget we aren’t done. I think that’s true for the majority of home improvement and renovation projects, but that’s not exactly a scientifically researched hypothesis.
My number one aesthetic priority when designing the kitchen was to make it timeless through layers of modern and traditional elements, making it uniquely mine and wonderfully rich in character. I also cared deeply about this goal because I absolutely 1000000% do not want to re-do this kitchen in 5 to 10 years. So, how did I do that you might ask? I meticulously paired each modern element with something of another, way back, era of feel. It’s that simple!
Here are my 3, biggest impact ways I accomplished this:
- Adorning and framing the very streamlined, modernly lit floating shelves with classically shaped jars of baking ingredients, warm wood accents, stone dishware, and copper and brass cooking tools. I also took advantage of the bonus personalization opportunity with the custom jar labels from Etsy!
- Laying the textured, inconsistent, handmade looking porcelain tiles in a modern brick stack pattern for the backsplash.
- Applying Marmorino plaster to the modern shaped vent hood to connect to the texture statement from the backsplash tile and soften the kitchen’s clean lines with organic visual movement. I love Marmorino because it is SO forgiving to apply and can be custom tinted to perfectly match your color scheme. It’s a high-end bespoke finish for honestly, very little stress and very economical when done as a DIY project.
You don’t need to undertake a complete kitchen renovation to accomplish the same in your home. Start small by pairing your own traditional or modern element with it’s opposite and watch the character in your space grow!
